I mostly agree with you, as for the most part the games try to do different things each time (whereas the original + 64 are pretty similar in terms of gameplay and structure). I played almost all of the Star Fox games last year, having never really played most of them other than 64 (N64+3DS) and the original. Now, on to unlocking Expert Mode, as that was the thing I never managed to do back then. If you haven't played Star Fox 64 and is aching for some good onrails shooting, this is the game I recommend the most. It's a shame that, after the failure of Zero, the series is as good as gone, but it's good to relieve what this title has achieved. It's really telling that the 3DS remake changes so little compared to the original the N64 title was good enough to stand on its own 14 years later (the timespan between the releases). And that's not even mentioning the masterful pacing the game knows how to give the player some breathing room (or none, in the case of Area 6), but then throw dozens of enemies onscreen in the next second. I can't relive the experience of discovering new things in each playthrough, but I do vaguely remember the delight in figuring out how to save Falco and go through all stone rings, fighting the alternative Corneria boss and visiting Sector Y for the first time, or discovering the warp portals. I concede that the route system is feeling a bit repetitive, but let's remember that I played this game so much that it's a given that there won't be anything new. Star Fox 64 also excels in gameplay: the game controls like a charm (though the smaller 3DS Circle Pad makes it harder to aim compared to the original), it's still fun to fly through things and shoot at stuff, and I even discovered a few tricks that got past child me. I've been playing the 3DS remake these days, and even though I played a ton of Star Fox in my N64 back in the day, I'm still impressed by what this game brings to the table and how much fun I'm having even after playing so much of it as a kid.Įvery element of the game is brought together to make what I consider a masterpiece: The planets are all unique (even the Sector levels feel very different from each other), bringing such a sense of adventure to your playthrough graphics are really immersive (both the original and the remake are gorgeous for their respective platforms) and really nails that atmosphere for each challenge music legit sounds like film score, even with the dated N64 soundfonts it still feels so epic and larger-than-life the on-screen banter between your teammates are not only entertaining but also help immerse you even more, and it's a shame that it's only remembered for memes nowadays.
